At Roan Ranch, there are stories that get under your skin. The story of RedRoan Chili Pepper is one of them.

For a long time, it was clear to us that, apart from our beloved Captain Blue Sparrow, a second stallion was unthinkable. Captain was our heart and soul, our pride and joy.

And then disaster struck... It hit us so hard that we decided to give up. We were completely thrown off track. But life doesn't always stick to plans. But there was still Red. Every time I saw pictures of him on the breeder's website, he captivated me with his incomparable charisma and deep, calm nature.

We struggled with the decision for a long time. Our guilty conscience towards Captain, the logistical challenges, Red's impending puberty... everything was screaming NO. But Red was always somehow present. We left it up to fate: if he met all our genetic requirements 100%, we would give it a try. The chances were very slim, especially with regard to MIM/PSSM2, but it just had to be that way.

Red comes from France, where he grew up on the wonderful Cow Sense ranch. From the very first minute, he completely won us over. Red radiates a calmness and serenity that is simply admirable. Nothing fazes him. He is wonderfully easy to handle: you ask – he does. He is incredibly intelligent, but in a charming, friendly way.

His pedigree is a veritable who's who of the Quarter Horse elite. It reads like a list of successful million-dollar sires: Hickory Holly Time, Big Chex To Cash, Shiner Olena – to name but a few. And the absolute highlight: he is 11.33% related to the incomparable Mr Gun Smoke and 90.58% foundation-bred! 

A foundation of legends that promises performance. His colour is also a highlight: in the rare red roan hz splash colour, he presents himself without the agouti gene. With homozygous black mares, he produces exclusively black/blue roan splash foals – a breeder's dream.

The future is now: Red still has to grow and prove himself. He is growing up in the midst of our herd, learning life as a stallion from the ground up, under the strict but fair training of the mares. Only when he has mastered this path will we see whether he has the potential to remain a breeding stallion or whether he will be happy as a gelding. One thing is already certain, however: Red Roan Chili Pepper is an enrichment to our lives and our ranch – a gift of fate that we have welcomed with open arms.
